Growing up in today's world can be a challenge. All children face typical worries - such as making friends and coping with peer pressure. Some students are forced to deal with divorce, death, poverty, violence, abuse, and bullying. At John Marshall Elementary school I help children cope effectively with both developmental issues and crises. Elementary school years set the tone for developing the skills, knowledge, and attitudes necessary for our children to become healthy, productive life-long learners.

Elementary school counselors can help students:

  • Feel good about themselves
  • Experience success in school
  • Communicate effectively
  • Develop positive relationships
  • Increase acceptance of diversity
  • Cope with stress, life changes, and crises
  • Prevent or manage conflict

Elementary school counselors can help parents:

  • Understand how to help their children achieve academic, social, and emotional potential
  • Recognize their children's accomplishments in relation to their abilities
  • Enhance their relationship with their children's schools
  • Gain access to services for their children

Elementary school counselors can help teachers:

  • Understand the developmental needs of students
  • Provide special assistance to individuals or groups of students
  • Provide units on life skills and educational issues
  • Obtain useful materials and resources
  • Maintain contacts with community agencies
